After bypassing paywalls and privacy protection settings, OpenAI has paused the version of its conversational agent for searches in Microsoft’s Bing browser, which is currently in beta for ChatGPT Plus subscribers.
OpenAI said it “cautiously” disabled the Browse feature with Bing in beta.
ChatGPT Browse for Bing is in turmoil. This latest feature offered in beta for OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus subscribers allows this tool to search the internet to help answer questions that benefit from recent information. The latter have access to features that are not available to free users, including a more powerful version of GPT-4, an extension store for GPT-4, and Browse with Bing. But the latter currently encounters a problem.
“We have learned that Microsoft’s ChatGPT Browse for Bing beta may occasionally display content in ways that we do not want. For example, if a user specifically requests the full text of a URL, that request may be inadvertently fulfilled,” said OpenAI. Several reports relate, for example, to a case where a ChatGPT Plus subscriber asked the chatbot for the full text of a URL, and the agent responded with the full-text bypassing paywalls – payment request screens to access an article, for example – but also privacy protection settings. Given the possible legal violations in terms of security and confidentiality of personal information, possible legal action may follow.
As of July 3, 2023, the publisher says it has disabled Browse with Bing in beta as a precaution; time to fix the issue and to respect content owners. “We are working to restore the beta version as soon as possible, and thank you for your understanding,” I also reacted to know OpenAI. The publisher is working hard to integrate its generative AI into Microsoft’s search engine. Not out of conviction or convenience: Last February, Microsoft announced that it was investing more than $13 billion in OpenAI.
